JOHANNESBURG. Mar 2: Greg Blewett helped himself to his t hird Test century is Australia took I he upper hand in

the first cricket Test against South Africa at the Wanderers on Sunday, reports AP.

Australia were 378 for four at tea on the third day thanks to Blewett s unbeaten 103 and Steve Waugh s 93 not out at the break.

The pair batted through two completed sessions after beginning the day on 191 for four in reply to South Africa s 302.

Blewett. 25. playing in his 14th Test since making his be-but against England in Adelaide in 1994-1995. was the dominant partner throughout the stand.

Continuing from a lunch time 284. Australia gradually batted South Africa out of the Test, giving them a 76-run lead with six second-inning wickets intact.

Blewett was particularly severe on fast bowler Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock and reached his century in the penultimate over before the

shared between former skipper Allan Border and Waugh in the 1993-1994 Adelaide Test match.

Blewett has so far batted for 275 minutes and faced 230 balls while Waugh has struck 11 balls in 284 minutes.

Blewett on drove medium paceman Jacques Kallis imperiously and in the process brought up the 200-run stand for the fifth wicket.

The more experienced Waugh was a silent partner in the post-lunch session, adding just 35 runs while Blewett took the attack to the bowlers.

The pair is four runs short of Australia's record fifth wicket stand against South Africa.
