At the end oTthe third day of the four-day match, the tourists, requiring 363 to win, were 166 for six, with Jack Russell on 19 and Robert Croft on 16.

Left-arm seamer Geoff Allott celebrated his recall to the senior side for next week's second Test by again knocking the top off the England innings, just as he had in the first innings.

Bowling with aggression, he dismissed openers Atherton and Nick Knight for four to have England reeling at six for two and returned later to have John Crawley caught behind and then bowled all-rounder Ronnie Irani.

Allott, who took four for 44 in the first innings, had four for 57 by stumps.

TTie only partnership of note had come from Nasser Hussain, who hit an impressive 57 and Crawley, who made 38 in 34 balls.

They added 66 in 70 balls for

the third wicket.

A win by New Zea]and A would pile further shame on Atherton's men. They have been lambasted by the media back home for failing to beat lowly Zimbabwe in the Tests and losing the one-day series there as

well as losing by seven wickets to Mashonaland.

Then, earlier this week, they had New Zealand on the ropes in the first Test but allowed a record tenth wicket stand by Nathan Astle and the world record-holder for Test ducks. Danny Morrison, to thwart

Meanwhile, the New Zealand selectors caused a sensation when they named 18 year-old left arm spinner Daniel Vettori in a 12-man squad for the second Test in Wellington.

Vettori will be New Zealand's youngest-ever Test player if he makes the starting line-up for the Basin Reserve Test, which

starts on Thursday.

Vettori only left high school at the end of last year and is 18 years. 10 days old.

The current record is 18 years. 197 days, set by Doug Freeman, who played against England in Christchurch in 1933.

VI Vcttdri- made - his first-class debut against England for1 Northern Districts late last month, taking one for 30 from 20 overs.

He then played his maiden Shell Trophy first class match for Northern Districts and took eight for 142 from 68.5 overs against Central Districts in Nelson earlier this week.

Vettori replaces Mark Haslam in one of three changes made to the 12 who drew the first Test at Eden Park earlier in the week.

Senior fast bowler Morrison has been dumped in favour of left-armer Geoff Allott.

Morrison, a regular test player, was not impressive in the first Test as a bowler and may still be feeling the effects of a groin injury which kept him out of cricket for six months until the first Test.

The third change brings in all-rounder Chris Harris who replaces Justin Vaughan.

Vaughan did not distinguish himself In the first Test and his replacement by Harris had been expected. But Adam Parore retains his place despite being suspended by the Auckland provincial team until the end of the season.
