RAJSHAHI. Oct 9 : The teachers, students and employees of the Rajshahi University, the second largest university bl the country, spend a total of Tk 2.70 lakh every day for smoking. according to a recent survey. reports UNB.

The survey organised by Applied Chemistry Department of the university, continued for one month and ended on July 25.

About 98 per cent of the smokers are aware of the ill-effects of smoking, but they simply don't care.

The teachers, students and employees of the university were divided into six groups for the purpose of the survey and classified into serious chain smoker, chain smoker and normal smoker. The serious chain smokers consume 50-55 cigarettes a day which is 32.550 per year, the chain smokers take 18.710 cigarettes and bidis a year' and normal smokers consume 15.153.

The survey also reviewed that 2.93 per cent of the female students are smoking every day while the percentage ol lemale employees is 4.

Among the teachers. 81 per cent took up smoking after getting their job while 82 per cent of the students said they have to borrow money to meet the additional expenses for smoking.

According to the survey. 8344 students spend about Tk TOflUkhon smoking every day while the dally expenses on ' smoking by 5S<5''teachers and 4000 employees are Tk 13.120 and Tk 80.000 respectively.
