Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina disapproved the DCC proposal for metropolitan government. saying except in the Philippines such concept is found nowhere in the world, reports UNB.

During a meeting with DCC Mayor Mohammad Hanif and ward commissioners yesterday, she said a committee had been formed with LGRD Minister as its Chairman to coordinate the service organisations for smooth working of the Dhaka City Corporation. Mayor Hanif is co-chairman of the coordination body.

The Prime Minister hoped that the coordination committee. where all the concerned departments and organisations are included, could play an effective role in resolving the problems DCC is facing.

She said this formula of coordination would also be introduced in other city corporations of the country.

The Prime Minister said the committee was formed after a

thorough review and taking suggestions from all concerned ministries.

The committee is for better coordination among the concerned departments and organisations and it will meet once a month and. if necessary, can meet on more occasions to discuss in detail the problems and solve those with an effective coordination.

During the 2-hour-long meeting, held at the International Conference Centre, ward commissioners raised various problems of the city, specially terrorism, waterlogging, coordination among different service organisations and conservancy. and suggested some remedies.

The Prime Minister regretted absence of personal initiatives on the part of commissioners In solving the problems and suggested them to take own initiatives for solving small problems.

"I know it is difficult to cope with the heavy pressure of regu-

lar influx of people into the capital. but some small problems can easily be solved if you take personal initiative."

She said her government had already taken steps and would try to create employment opportunity by gearing economic activities in cities and other parts of the country to stop exodus of people into the capital.

The Prime Minister said people's representatives are accountable to the people who would judge them taking account of their services and works and give reply in elections.

We are here to render service to the people ... do your liest to do something for Ilie people and country." she said in an appeal to the commissioners assuring them of all possible help from the government.

"No head of government in the past had met with the commissioners to know their problems. even it is not my duty," Hasina said. "I am holding meeting with you as I want to do something for the people."

She said the LGRD ministry had already approved the DCC budget and budgetary allocations for all city corporations had been increased.

Responding to a demand for giving magisterial status to the commissioners. Hasina said she would look into it and discuss it with the concerned ministry.

Mayor Mohammad Hanif assured the Prime Minister of presenting a better Dhaka before completion of three years in the office of Mayor in next March.
