This is an extremely complicated investigation, involv ing hundreds of witnesses around the country and thou sands of pieces of evidence Alexander said The govern ment has no desire to spotlight anyone in the investigation un til a defendant is named and charges are filed, and that is part of the reason for filing the response under seal

Jewell was credited with finding the knapsack containing the bomb before it exploded early July 27. leading to two deaths and injuring 111. He emerged as a suspect three days later.

Jewell's lawyer wants to see sworn statements that led to warrants to search Jewell s I apartment, his vehicle and a storage unit, and to pluck hairs from his head. He has asked for ' the government to show com ! pelllng reasons why the documents should be kept secret.

Numerous items were taken from Jewell s property but he has not been charged in the bombing.

A brief filed with the motion seeking to unseal the docu menu said Jewell is interested in learning whether his constitutional rights were violated by an illegal search
