He was speaking during a meeting with the office bearers of the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) in Sylhet yesterday. The finance minister also discussed different aspects of promotion of business and development of industry in the district.

SCCI president M A Momin led the chamber team in the discussion held at the Collec-torate conference room yesterday morning.

Later, the finance minister told senior officials of district and divisional levels that the people's legitimate rights should be ensured with service-oriented outlook, shunning the bureaucratic attitude.

"Government officials are merely representatives of the government, but they are ser-

vants of the people." Kibria said, adding that hopes and aspirations of the people and improvement of their lots depended on the officials.

He said the government formulates the -policies fcr development of the country and the government officials implement them.

The present government is the government of the people, he said, which, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, would run the country upon advice from all and on national consensus.

Kibria said the present government does not believe in politicisation of the administration as it cannot bring any good for the country or its people. "It only creates indiscipline," he said.

Stressing the need for removing corruption and terrorism from every level of society and the country, the finance minister said that concerted efforts of all officials engaged in the administrative mechanism were imperative.

He also emphasised on sincere and neutral performance of duties by the officials with dignity, self-esteem and free of political influence.
