Bank loan defaulters have been disqualified from participating in the coming June 12 general elections, according to an Election Commission press release issued In the city yesterday. reports BSS.

Announcing the qualifications and disqualifications for election to parliament, the Election Commission said as per Article 66 (1) of the Constitution, a person shall be qualified to be elected as. and to be. a member of parliament if he is a citizen of Bangladesh and has attained the age of twenty five years.

A person shall be disqualified for election as or for being. a member of parliament who — is declared by a competent court to be of unsound mind.

— Is an undischarged insolvent.

— acquires the citizenship of, or affirms or acknowledges allegiance to a foreign state.

— has been on convictiort for a criminal offence involving moral turpitude, sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years, unless a period of five years has elapsed since his release. — holds any office of profit in the service of the Republic other than an office which Is declared by law not to disqualify its holders.

Besides, the Election Commission said, as per Section 12 (1) of the People's Representation Order of 1972, a person shall be disqualified for election as a member of Parliament if he holds any office of profit of the Republic or statutory authority, excepting contracts between any cooperative society and government. if he enters into any contract by him or on his behalf for gaining profit or as a member of undivided Hindu family having partnership or interest in the contract, or if he enters upon any contract for the supply of commodities to the government, or for implementation of any contract or for execution of any service oriented programmes taken up by the government.

The Election Commission disqualified the persons for election to the Jatiya Sangsad if he/she on the date of filing nomination papers remains defaulter of any loan for the payment of any instalment of the loan from the bank other than those for house building loan for residential accommodation.

— if he/she Is a director of any company or partner of any firm which is defaulted in the repayment of any loan from any bank or in the payment of any Instalment of that loan.

— if he. being the director of any financial Institution as per description of the Finance Credit Court Act of 1990, is defaulted in the repayment of loan taken from the bank or in the repayment of any instalment of that.
