At least 25 students were injured in sporadic clashes between police and students on the Dhaka University campus yesterday as the Prime Minister opened the Amar Ekushey Bol Mela at the Bangla Academy premises adjacent to the campus.

Five people were hospitalised with bullet and bomb injuries, according to our DMCH correspondent.

None was arrested in connection with the violence, according to police.

The trouble started shortly after Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia arrived at the heavily guarded Bangla Academy premises to inaugurate the month-long book fair.

A series of crude bombs were exploded and several rounds of shot were fired on the campus as the PM was inaugurating the book fair.

Police lobbed tear gas shells and used batons to disperse student marchers who were demonstrating

against the PM's visit to the campus and protesting Wednesday’s police raid’ in two DU dormitories that left at least 200 students injured.

A tense situation was prevailing in and around the DU since yesterday as activists of different students' organisations. predominantly female students, took positions at different points.

The police on duty halted the procession when it reached the DUS cafeteria near the Teachers' Students' Centre (TSC) The teachers’ procession was scheduled to end at the Central Shaheed Minar after marching through the TSC and Doel Chattar areas

Police Intercepted the procession at the TSC intersection as the road which heads towards the Bangla Academy was closed because of the Prime Minister's scheduled visit to inaugurate the Ekushey Book Fair at 11 am.

At one stage, the teachers, sat on the street. The sit-in demonstration was held for about 20 minutes.

In the afternoon, the DUTA. apex forum of the DU teachers, adopted 10 resolutions to protest and condemn the police atrocities' in the university campus.

The DUTA resolution condemning the police role noted that police stopped the teachers' mourning procession at the TSC while allowed the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) to hold their noisy procession on the road in front of the Bangla Academy.

The DU teacners also decided not to participate in any programme at the Bangla Academy during this month and urged the other professional socio-cultural organisations to take similar decisions.
