JESSORE. Nov 10: Aman crop is expected to exceed the production target by a wide margin in ten districts of south-western zone of the country during the current season, a source said.

According to a spokesman of the regional office of the Additional Director. Agriculture Extension Department. Jessore. transplanted aman was cultivated on six lakh 89 thousand 182 hectares of land while the target was 6 lakh seventy nine thousand 789 hectares in Jessore. Jhenidah, Magura. Narail. Khulna. Bagerhat, Satkhira. Kushtia. Chuadanga and Me-herpur districts.

Detailed information says that HYV (High yielding Variety) was cultivated on four lakh 84 thousand 547 hectares and local variety on two lakh' four thousand 635 hectares of land.

Target of HYV was four lakh 80 thousand 188 hectares and that of local was one lakh 99 thousand 601 hectares.

Production rate of HYV is

expected to be 2.5 MT (metric tone) per hectare and local variety at the rate of 1.5 MT per hectare. Thus total production is likely to exceed the target by 10%. the source added.

It was also learnt from the same source that during the last season, aman was cultivated on six lakh 65 thousand 105 hectares.

HYV was cultivated on four lakh 51 thousand 153 hectares and local variety on two lakh 13 thousand 952 hectares.

At the beginning of the season, problems Including continued drought, non-avail-ability of seeds and fertilizer crisis were prevailing disappointing farmers completely, the source said.

During the mature situation of harvest, the weather was completely in favour of the farmers and the crises of seeds and fertilizer were solved at their own initiative. This climatic effect has brought a better result of cultivation achieving record production, the soiirce added.
