In a shocking revelation. Dhaka I niversity authorities pul up an admissions cancellation notice in the newspapers on Wednesday involving as many as 80 enrolled students. They had purportedly furnished wrong information and resorted to forgery to gain admission to various post graduate courses for the 1992-93 academic session.

By publishing this notice Dhaka ( niversity has no doubt sought to fulfil a legal requirement. in the process it has also served a public interest of vital importance concerned with the maintenance of sanctity and high moral standards at the top-most seat of learning in the country. While acknowledging the DU's spirit underlying the move, we feel duty-bound nonetheless to make some observations on the belated measure it has taken.

One wonders why the mechanism at the university that has now worked to discover the truth had failed so badly to detect the wrong-doing when it was being committed at the time of admission. The figures are just for a certain number of disciplines at one level — the post-graduate level. And these also relate to three residential halls where the admission seekers had their applications processed — Rokeya Halt A F FJunan Hall and Jagannath Hall These may just be a tip of the iceberg. Yes. well, certain halls and departments may be more vulnerable than perhaps but dial hardly lessens the worry given the size of the university. And. others to such a mischief if one were to say that such f aking of eligibility has been going on for years across a broader spectrum of the labyrinth would he be wide off the mark? Even if a dozen sneak through the set procedures of admission and succeed in enrolling them as students that would be a damaging enough setback to the reputation of DU, kt alone the eighty who have made the news.

Since the action against the students is based on proven grounds — as stated in the DU notice — the natural question to follow from this is: What measure the university authority simultaneously proposes to take against those who from inside must have abetted in their illegal entries. Whether they are zealous student party loyalists or employees or both they must be made accountable for any such excess committed.

We are not assuming anything; but there is no denying the fault line in the system the DU notice indirectly once again has opened our eyes to. Those can be enough of a loophole for outsiders to sneak in through, witether we want it or not
