"I decided to respond to what Voinea said. I can't let a player say that the umpires have lied to him.'' the tournament referee Gilbert Yzern said on Monday.

"Voinea's words are the result of a mlsunderstandtng.” he added.

Yzern justified the decision to stop the match at the end of the second set by an "unwritten rule" according to which it is recommended not to start a new set when it rains.

The supervisor did not tell Voinea that the matches had been called off on other courts. He told him that no set was starting on any other court." he said.

Becker also attacked the organisers after his loss, saying it was impossible to play in ■formal conditions on Saturday evening.

"We got out. It was dark.

The court was completely wet. The balls were brown after five minutes. They Just don’t care about the players, you know," he said.

The German world number three added that the organisers had told him the weather was good enough to play.
