HONG KONG. May 4: Asian stock markets closed mostly higher Thursday, with share prices rising in Hong Kong for the second straight day, reports AP.

The Hang Seng Index, the Hong Kong market’s key indicator of blue chips, rose 20.08 points, or 0.2 per cent, closing at 8.319.75. On Wednesday, the index had gained 87 points.

Brokers attributed the rise to continued bargain-hunting following sharp falls earlier this week.

They said the overnight record rally on Wall Street also improved local market sentiment.

In Sydney. Australian share prices closed sharply higher, boosted by the gains on Wall Street Wednesday and better-than-expected local current account data.

The All Ordinaries Index rose 27.8 points, or 1.4 per (ent. closing at 2,065.4.

A broker said the market opened stronger on the back of the US rally. It continued to rise after the release of official data showing Australia's current account deficit was lower than most had expected.

The market was closed in Japan for a national holiday.

BANGKOK: Thai share prices closed higher in heavy trading. The Stock Exchange'

WELLINGTON: New Zealand share prices closed higher in busy trading, with brokers expecting the market to remain strong in line with major overseas markets. The NZSE-40 Capital Index rose 19.97 points to 2.122.48.

MANILA: Share prices closed higher on foreign buying after two days of declines. The Philippines' unified composite index of 43 selected issues rose 27.54 points to 2.472.12.

SEOUL: Share prices closed slightly higher ‘in decreased trading. The Korea Composite Stock Price Index rose 1.32 poinjs to 922.05.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian ' share prices closed mixed after failing to sustain early '.buying. The KLSE Composite index rose 0.70 point to 951.38.

SINGAPORE: Share prices closed slightly higher for the second straight day in thin trading. The 30-share Straits Times Industrials Index rose 3.63 points to 2.069.98.
