Dec II West Indian bowlers failed to penetrate India's defences in the third Test here

Sunday after a career-best 174 not out from Jimmy Adams gave the tourists their highest score in the series so far. reports AFP •

After Adams' marathon seven-and-a half hour effort had Dred the West indies to ■ 443 in their first innings, the _ Indfons replied with 95 for’ one by stumps on the second day at the Mohall Stadium here.

The West Indians, looking for a win to square (he three-match series, leapt with Joy when skipper Courtney Walsh forced opener Navjot Sidhu to • fend the fifth ball of the innings on to his stumps io make India one for one.

But Manoj Prabhakar and Sanjay Manjrekar repaired the early damage with an unbroken stand of 94 for the second-wicket to keep the home yearn on course for a strong reply.

Prabhakar, wicketless in the West Indian first Innings, made amends with a doughtly unbeaten 55. Manjrekar. promoted to number three In the place of the off-form Vinod Kambll, was batting to 33 at close.

Manjrekar. hpwever. was lucky to survive till stumps as Carl Hopper missed a waist -high catch at second slip off seamer Ken Benjamin in the dying moments.

The West Indians, whose previous best score in the series was 428 in th* second Test at Nagpur, were well served by Adams, their best batsman on the tour so far. ( The 28;year-old Jamaican left-hander, who made 81 in the first Test in Bombay and 125 not out in the second, hit

19 boundaries while rescuing his team from the depths of 220 for five

It was Adams' third Test century In 12 matches and the second In successive games against India.

Adams found and able ally in tailender Anderson Cummins, who slammed a career best 50 during a defiant stand of 99 for the seventh-wicket after the West Indians were reeling at 296 for six.

Resuming at Saturday's score of 296 for six. the West Indians added 147 runs for the remaining four wickets before being all out 25 minutes before

Adams scored 90 of these runs, but was still stranded at one end as the Indian spinners polished off the tall at the other.

Leg spinner Anil Kumble was India n most successful bowler with the figures of four for 90 He now needs just one more wicket to complete the landmark of 100 Test victims.

Left-arm spinner Venkatpathy Raju took three for 73 while seamer Javagal Srlnath took two for 106 from 32 overs.
