RAWALPINDI, Oct 9 Australian fast bowler Damien Fleming took a hattrick on his Test debut and

Pakistan captain Salim Malik completed a record-breaking double century as the second Test ended in a draw on Sunday, reports Reuter.

Pakistan, who fallowed on 261 behind, were all out for 537 on the fifth and final day. and the match ended with Australia 14 for one in their second Innings.

The draw ensured Pakistan take a 1-0 series lead into the third and last Test starting In Lahore on November 1.

Fleming became the third bowler to do the hattrick In his first Test when he took wickets with the last two deliveries of his 23rd over and the first of his 24th. removing Aamer Malik (65). Inzamamul Haq and Salim Malik.

Salim, who resumed on 155 out of the overnight 324 for two went on to 237 — his first double century In 79 Tests and the highest score by a Pakistani against Australia.

Pakistan s fightback — they were dismissed for 260 in their first innings after Australian made 521 for nine declared — was spearheaded by Salim whose Innings of 328 balls contained 34 fours.

Salim beat the previous Test best by a Pakistani against Australia df 21 1 by former captain Javed Miandad at Karachi In the 1988 series.

He was Involved in partnerships of 148 with Saeed Anwar (75) for the second-wicket. 109 with Aamer Sohail (72) for the third and 133 with Aamer Malik (65) for the fourth after Pakistan had followed on at home for only the second time In their Test history

Salim shared the individual honours with Fleming, whose debut Test hattrick followed his four for 75 in the first innings.

Fleming Is among a trio completed by England rnedium-pacer Maurice Allom. who took a Test debut hattrick against New Zealand at Christchurch during the 1929-30 tour, and New Zealand off-spinner Peter Petherlck. whose debut hattrick was against Pakistan at Lahore in the 1976-77 series.

Australian captain Mark Taylor gave all his players except wicketkeeper Ian Healy a bowl, initially in a desperate

attempt to break through and then for fun when ft became clear a draw was inevitable

Salim said he would keep Zahid Fazal In the team despite his poor performance tn the series so far. He scored only one and three In his two Innings at Rawalpindi

"I rate Zahid as a good batsman. Unfortunately he always came In to bat under

pressure and difficult circumstances." he said. "But It Is up to the selectors .whom they keep in the side and whom they drop."

Salim criticised the fact that a triangular limited overs series Involving Pakistan. Australia and South Africa is being staged between the second and third Tests.

He said the players would find it hard to adjust to the different tempo, and added: "Either they should have completed the Tests first or the one-dayers."

On his decision to put Australia In to bat after he won the toss. Salim said he had expected there to be uneven bounce in the Rawalpindi pitch, which turned out to be bland.

"Nevertheless I am still happy that we chose to bowl first ... otherwise we would have been like Australia, who had to field for three days which Is certainly very tiring." he said.
