It was the first time since May 10 that the Nikkei closed below 20.000 points. The Index rose for much of the day on buying by public funds, but fell quickly In the last 90 minutes as dealers took profits.
The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all issues listed on the first section was down 3.75 points, or 0.24 per cent, cloe ing at 1.582.31.
In Hong Kong, share* closed lower following almost a week of gains.
The Hang Seng Index, the market's key Indicator of blue chips, shed 14.89 points, or 0.1 per cent, to lb, 150.98.
