LALMONIRHAT. Sept 8: A man was trampled to death and 20 others, including three BDR Jawans. were injured when an angry mob attacked BDR personnel at a hat (bazar) in Kaliganj thana of the district on Wednesday, reports UNB.

BDR sources today said a Task Force composed of BDR Jawans and led by Narayan Chandra Barman. Magistrate - First Class, went to the Chamtar Hat and seized I 1 Indian smuggled bicycles from the sellers.

At this the people gheraoed the Task Force members and started pelting stones and bricks on them protesting the seizure. Finding no other alternative. BDR Jawans fired 24 rourtds of shot in the sky to disperse the angry mob.

The crowd of 15.000 people. who came to the hat. started running helter and skelter causing a stampede In which a day labourer, identified as Jatra Mohan Barman. 50. died on the spot.. Al least 20 people were also injured in the stampede.

Seriously injured Sepoy Gias. 25. was admitted to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Local people and businessmen said that valuables worth about Tk 20 lakh were looted during hour-long clash.

Additional District Magistrate and Police Super visited the spot today.

The BDR filed a case with the Kaliganj police but none was arrested.

Chamtar Hat is one of the biggest hats in Lalmonlrhat district.
