Late night gunshots and mysterious outsiders still threaten the academic atmosphere of Dhaka University although a week long ban on poUOcal activities imposed Saturday remains effective

Meanwhile in order to end the campus violence, moves are underway for talks with the Vice-Chancellor university high officials and leaders of different student bodies, including those of the ICD BCL and Ganatantrik Chhatra OikkyolGCOJ

A high-official of the university informed The Daily Star that the talks are Mktty to take ptace Tuesday

In the Arts Faculty premises yesterday morning a student of PoiMlcaJ Science Zafar, was

beaten by a group of unidenti fled persons

Witnesses said five persons came to the Department of Political Science at 12 30 pm and attacked Zafar who. they said was a BCL activist

The attackers left the scene after a few minutes

Zafar denied his association with any student body wit nesses added

At around 1:35 am yester day residential students of Surya Sen. Mohsin. Jasim uddin. Zia. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sir A F Rahman halls heard at least 20 rounds of sporadic gunfire. The students said they also heard gunshots from the direction of the TSC They said, the gunshot* continued till 2:30 am.

During the day. no rally or procession was organised by any student body.

A number of outsider* were, however, seen moving around the campus suspiciously. Witnesses said, some of these unknown faces were carrying firearms.

Police forces were deployed near the TSC. Modhu* Canteen. Central Library. VC's residence. Surya Sen Hall. Mohsin Hall and the Nilkhet police station.

Talking to The Dally Star over phone last night. DU proctor Dr Md Nazrul Islam said, we hope to settle the matter peacefully through discussion with student leaders within a week. I believe the week-long ban on political ac-tivities would help improve the campus situation."

Dr A A M S Arefto Hiddlque. speaking about the ban on politics said, "this only eoametic solution to the real problems '

"I believe the authorities should focus on the malnte nance of law and order on the campus rather than political activities The temporary ban cannot improve the situation as gunshots can still be heard." he pointed out.

"During Thursday's violence. the police remained silent A group of terrorists entered the Arts building and threatened the teachers' lives — yet there was no police action." Arefin Slddlque added.

Expressing hi* sense of insecurity the associated professor termed the current situa tlon on the campus as “explosive.”

The seven-day ban is useless. But it has had some positive impact." a student leader of a leading organisation said.

There was a possibility of serious clashes today. All armed cadres of the JCD-BCL were ready, as far as I know But i his ban prevented possi ble clashes.” he commented, requesting anonymity.

"The authorities banned political activities, not gun battles" said a student of Public Administration bitterly, adding: This is no solution.''
