Speaker Shaikh Razzak Ali yesterday said united efforts were needed immediately to prevent further degradation of the environment and stop desertification, alarming increase of salinity and fish output decline in the country due to the adverse effects of Farakka barrage, reports UNB.

"The largest mangrove Sun-darban is facing destruction due to the adverse effects of Farakka barrage. Fish cultivation has alarmingly been affected as the flow of the Ganges reduced to a great extent." he said.

The Speaker was addressing as chief guest a discussion meeting on "Environ ment and Education" at the BANBEIS auditorium. The Na tlonal Association of UNESCO Clubs in Bangladesh and the Bangladesh National Comml sslon for UNESCO and the Ministry of Education Jointly arranged the discussions to mark the World Environment Day
