TOKYO. July 6: Japan is ready to take a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Foreign Minister Kabun Muto said today. reports AFP.

Muto was speaking to reporters after briefing the cabinet on Japan's position on reorganizing the Council. The position will be submitted to UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali soon, officials said.

"Japan is ready to take responsibility for what it has to do at the UN Security Council tb the utmost of its ability," Muto said quoting a document on the council reorganisation submitted to the United Nations.

The statement also proposed that the number of Security Council members be expanded from 15 to 20 to reflect the current international situation, adding that the selection of additional permanent members should take into consideration "whether or not they exert Influence globally In political, economic and other fields."
