The Non-aligned Movement (NAM) standing ministerial committee on economic cooperation is scheduled to begin in Indonesia on Monday next.

A high-level Bangladesh delegation is expected to at tend the 3-day meeting, which would also be attended by 37 member nations.

Formed at the Harare NAM . summit in 1986. the first meeting of the committee was held in 1988.

According to an official source, this would be the second session of the committee which could not meet after the former Yugoslav federation look over the NAM chairmanship in 1989

However, he added, after Indonesia took over the NAM chairmanship last year ft took great interest in rejuvenating the network to promote economic cooperation among member state*.

Al the Jakarta summit last September there was a grow Ing awareness among the member nations to re-focus attention of the organisation in light of the changing interna tional scenario, particularly the end of the cold war

NAM leaders in Jakarta agreed that the organisation, which was formed as a consequence of the cold war, should henceforth put greater atten tion on economic issues and find ways and means to revitalize the North-Soutfi dialogue as well as Io promote South-South cooperation.

The upcoming session of the committee is expected to be inaugurated by Indonesian President Suharto in Jakarta

The session, the source said, is likely to be a brainstorming session with a view Io focusing on Identifying possible areas of economic cooperation among the member nations.

Foreign ministers of member states are members of the NAM standing ministerial committee on economic cooperation.

Foreign Minister ASM Mostafizur Rahman is likely to lead the Bangladesh delegation which is scheduled to leave for Jakarta on Thursday, the official source said.

However, he added that as the Foreign Minister is accompanying Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia to the funeral of slain Shri Lankan President Ranaslnghe Premadasa In Colombo on Thursday, his departure for Jakarta is likely to be delayed.
