CHITTAGONG. May 4 Tribal rebels ambushed and killed a soldier and injured an other this morning in the southeastern hill district of Khagrachharl, security official i said.

Quaid-e-Azam, 26, a Lan.< Naik, died on the spot from bullet wounds when the rebels, known as Shantibahini, made a fresh attack on an army patrol at Babuchara village under Dighlnala thana at 9:00 am today, officials added.

Another sepoy, Ramzan Ail. who was also Injured during the attack by the Shantibahini In violation of the ceasefire which was extended up to May 31, was admitted into a military hospital at Dlghinala.

The body of Azam was later sent to his home at Lalmonirhat.

However, the tribal rebels retreated in th$ face of counter-attack by the army, security sources said, adding that there was a heavy exchange of fire with the rebels after the ambush.

Immediately after the inci- '1 dent a large number of army ’ personnel rushed to the spot from the nearby camps and began a search in the jungles of the hilly area.

The rebel*, violating the ceasefire, made two other attacks on army patrols earlier on January 13 and 15. One soldier was seriously wounded in the attack on January 15 at Khagrachhari. The other attack was in the Bandarban district

Today's attack came in the wake of the announcement by the government of a proposed new date for holding the third 'round of peace talk* with the Shanllbahtnl leaders on May 22 in an effort to politically resolve the I8-year-old insurgency.

Two other round* of talk* under the present government were held on November 5 and December 26, 1992 between the parliamentary committee headed by the Communlcatipns Minister Col (Rtd) Oli Ahmed and the Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samlty (PCJSS), the parent organisation of the rebel*. led by its president J B Izirma alias Shanto l-arma.
