Awami League candidate in the Mirpur by-election Kamal Ahmed Majumder fears- violence during balloting scheduled for tomorrow tn the parliamentary constituency.

"If the by-poll is held neutrally and peacefully. I must win it by 30.000 votes," Majumder told The Daily Star in an exclusive interview at his campaign office in Mirpur yesterday.

Commenting on his main rival pyed Mohammad Mohsin of ’he BNP. the AL candidate Mailed the ruling party nominee's father SA Khaleq. who claims to have quit the dptlya Party, saying "Khaleq Is the root of all acts of terrorism In Mirpur".

He accused Khaleq of attacking AL campaigners, bribing voters and threatening the minority electorate, that supported the At.

Majumder demanded that Khaleq be declared unwanted tn Mirpur during voting hours tomorrow or that his conduct during the by-elcctlon be observed by the authorities concerned.

Majumder termed the steps by the Election Commission adequate for a fair vote and expressed his profound confidence in the EC authorities. He however blamed the government leadership for what he termed influencing the voters.

Responding to a question, the 42-year-old industrialist-politician remarked. " The BNP chief claims to be an uncompromising leader, but she has compromised with the fallen autocrats by selecting the son of SA Khaleq. a close aide of autocrat Ershad, as her party candidate crucial by -poll In Mirpur.

Majumder, If elected, wants that problems like terrorism, under development and abandoned property disputes facing the Mlrpur people be raised in Parliament and solved.

Born in Fenl district and settled tn Mirpur later, Majumder accused h1s rivals of dividing the voters on the question of locals non-locals. More than 80 per cent of the Mlrpur residents were settlers, he claimed.
