The Home Ministry Wed nesday issued a Press Note to remove confusion that was created out of publication of a news item tn a section of the press on "hitting a procession by a police vehicle, reports BSS

The Press Note said a rally of 200 to 250 supporters of Chhatra League was held In front of the Jatlya Press Club on Tuesday at the call of Chhatra League to press home the demand for the release of Md Masum Ahmed alias Masum. one of the main accused tn the murder case of Dhaka University student leader Mahbubul Alam alias Mahbub. Masum was arrested on December 9.

They brought out a procession after the rally which gradually became aggressive while proceeding towards UBL Crossing. When the procession was obstructed near the UBL Crossing due to jam on the road, the police official on duty along with his force tried to control the traffic to facilitate the movement of the processton. At that time some members from the procession attacked his (police official) Jeep. No-HA 8982.

They damaged the hood and the bonnet of the jeep. The police tried to disperse them by charging lathis when they damaged a microbus at the same time. Three were ar rested while damaging the po Uce jeep.

At that time one person was hurt when he fell down from the bonnet of the jeep, the Press Note added.

The Press Note said it was not true that the police Jeep hit the procession.

It further pointed out that the members of the procession became more unruly and proceeded toward' Bangabandhu Avenue damaging vehicles in front of Awaml League office. They continued this process while moving towards Golap Shah Mazar and Gulistan Cinema Hall.

Under the circumstances the police brought the situation under control and dispersed the unruly mob by lathi charge. The police arrested three more persons Including Chhatra League leader Kamruzzaman Ansari while they were engaged in damaging vehicles.

The Press Note said on December 9 Chhatra League workers set ablaze a mini bus. a private car and a motor cycle in and around the university area protesting the arrest of Masum.

Even on Tuesday they set ablaze two mtcrobuses. a Pajero Jeep and a motor cycle.

The police were compelled to take legal action to bring such unlawful and destructive activities under control, it said.

The government hoped that the clarification would dispel the confusion on the issue.
