CHITTAGONG. Dec 1 1: The half-day hartal observed in the port city and Its surrounding areas today was marked by acts of violence Including sporadic blasts of cocktails, arson and massive picketing that left at least ten persons Injured.

Chhatra League Chittagong unit gave the call for today's hartal from 6 am to 12 noon in protest against the killing of its three activists allegedly by Shibir members aided by NDP supporters on Sunday after noon at Forhadabad football maidan under Hathazail thana

Cocktails were exploded in different parts of the city and its surrounding areas including Anderkllla. city corporation office premises, Jamalkhan Road. New Market crossing. Lalkhan Bazar, Chawkbazar, Agrabad Badamtoll. Moghaltoll port crossing and Hathazarl road

BCL activists started massive picketing from early morning at various points of the city and six rickshaws were set ablaze in addition to the damaging of over a dozen Rickshaw pullers suffered physical torture, witnesses said. Those injured in the cocktail blasts and due to torturing were admitted to the Medical Hospital and other clinics.

No police vans or patrols were seen on the roads here during today's hartal. Besides normal life came to a halt during the hartal period. All vehicles stayed off the roads and highways and shopping arcades and markets remained closed.

BCL activists reportedly forced shopkeeper^ inside narrow lanes here to pull down their shutters.

Both private and public offices here could not function a due to thin attendance banks could not operate.

Carrying of cargo to and from Chittagong Port was suspended during the hartal pe riod due to the non plying of trucks. Mills and factories at Naalrabad and Sltakunda Industrial belts suffered production losses.

BCL activists also brought out a series of processions from different places here calling for the arrest of the alleged killers Immediately.
