Former ministers Shah Moazzem Hossain and Mahbubur Rahman and former state minister Nurun Nabi Chand have been arrested on various charges.

Shah Moazzem Hossain and Nurun Nabi Chand, charged with alleged involvement in corruption regarding the purchase of gunny bags worth Taka 1.50 crore, surrendered on Sunday before the Metropolitan Magistrate. They sought bail but were refused and sent to custody.

The Ramna Police arrested and detained them. Allegations against them include misuse of power and misappropriation of government fund.

Earlier on November 6 the Special Branch of police arrested former minister Mahbubur Rahman who was in hiding since the fall of the Ershad regime, from his

Dhanmondi residence, his family sources said.

When contacted. Dhanmondi policy could not provide any information regarding his arrest. However the officer on duty said that Mahbubur Rahman was probably arrested by the Special Branch.

At around midnight November 6, police gheraoed his residence and took him Into custody. He was reportedly arrested under the Special Powers Act.

According to concerned sources, the government has not yet registered any case against him. However the sources said that there were some allegations against Mahbubur Rahman, one of which was regarding the murder of one of his maid servants.

His family sources said that Mahbubur Rahman was sent to the Dhaka Central Jail immediately after his arrest and was later, sent to Mymenstngh Jail on Saturday.

Meanwhile, President of the Jatlya Sramik Party Shah Mohammad Abu Zafar and the party General Secretary M A Gafur have condemned the arrest of Shah Moazzem and Nurun Nabi Chand. But the press release did not mention anything about the arrest of Mahbubur Rahman.
