LONDON. Oct 9 : Liverpool winger Jimmy Carter signed for English league champions Arsenal for an

estimated 500,000 pounds sterling (865,000 dollars) on Tuesday, reports Reuter.

The move will further intensify competition for places among forward players at Arsenal, who recently signed England striker lan Wright from Crystal Palace for 2.5 million pounds (4.35 million dollars).

An earlier report said : Arsenal manager George Graham took another dip in the transfer market on Tuesday to sign Liverpool’s Jimmy Carter for 500,000 pounds.

The homesick winger moves back to London only two weeks after Arsenal paid Crystal Palace 2.5 million pounds for England striker Ian Wright. And Carter joins the Football League's most overmanned strike force.

Graham has also agreed to pay 500,000 pounds for Norwegian defender Pal Lydcrsen.. That depends on Lydcrscn *gettlng a British work permit though.

Carter. 25, only moved to Liverpool from Millawall In January. But he has been unable to get a regular first team place and his prospects wcr< not Improved by the arrival of Mark Walters this season.

"It Is a dream come true. Arsenal arc the club I have al ways wanted to play for," said Carter. "I was born just around

the corner in Islington.

”1 didn't get many games at Liverpool but that's the way it goes. Kenny Dalglish signed me and then resigned four weeks later."

He started his career with Crystal Palace moving from to Queen's Park Rangers on a free transfer and then Millwall, who paid just 15,000 pounds for him.

Carter signed for Arsenal after very short talks at Highbury on Tuesday morning. Liverpool will get 300.000 pounds less than they paid for him.

ited at Arsenal, but Graham is keen to Increase his squad with the prospect of a long gruelling season in European and domestic competitions ahead.

Graham now has seven front line players to choose from and Parry Groves is already being tipped as a possible departure. Manchester City arc said to be interested in Groves, who ' was singed from Colchester five years ago.
