Mosquito menace

Oct 9 : Mosquito menace has made life miserable in the town.
Silted drains and derelict ponds dumped with filth and garbage all over the city area are acting as Ideal breeding centre for mosquitoes. Water logging caused by slight rainfall also help Increase mosquito breeding.
The situation becomes worse after sunset when residents are forced to take shelter under mosquito net. Even babies are to sleep under mosquito net during day time.
Local people urged the City Corporation authorities to take effective measures for eradicating mosquito in the city area.

BNP leader released from jail
Oct 9 : Md Mokhlcsur Rahman, a leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of Iswardt upazila was released from the jail hazat after 30 months Tuesday, reports UNB.
Police arrested him in November, 1988 in connection with two separate murder cases.
He was accorded a grand reception by local BNP members at the jail gate.
Kazi Mahbubul Alam, former president of the district Chhatra Moitree was also released the same day.
Alam was arrested in connection with the murder of Ahmed Karim, president of JSD (Rab) was stabbed to death by some miscreants on' October 30. 1990.

Jute growers deprived of fair price

Oct 9 : Jute growers of Panchagarh and Thakurgaon districts are not getting fair price of their produce.
Three Jute purchasing cen-1 tres have been opened in Thakurgaon at Shlbganj, Ituhca and Thakurgaon road in Thakurgaon d is triet. But they have not started purchasing yet. Only BJMC at Shlbganj purchased 80 maunds of jute a few weeks back at Taka 106 per maund on the opening day but at present they are nut purchasing ft. As such jute growers ale facing difficulties.
The fanners are compelled to sell their produce lo the farias and brokers at Taka 120 to 140 per maund. It is men-Uonabk- that a total of 33.000 acres were brought under jute cultivation in Panchagar and Thakurgaon districts.

Teachers yet to get govt grants
Oct 9 : The government grants for the six non-govern-ment primary schools tn the Sadar upazila of the district have remained undisbursed because of bureaucratic ncgll fence, local leadens alleged, reports UNB
An amount of Tk 72,000 under the compulsory primary education scheme had been sanctioned for six months from January to June this year.
The money was to be dis buried to 29 teachers belong •ng to Abdulpur Primary School. Bhravim Primary School, Nablnagar Primary School. Koromullahpur Primary School. Nlmarai Primary School and Pashlm Sadhu hall Primary School.
It has been alleged that the Sadar Upazila Education Officer took no initiative to disburse the amount and the sanction allowed to lapse with the closing of 1990-1991 fiscal year

Smuggled goods recovered: 3 arrested
Oct 9 : Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) sefzed goods worth about Tk 29.61 lakh and arrested three alleged smugglers from different parts of the district during the last week, reports UNB.
The seized contraband goods include Indian saree. sugar, cattlchead, cosmetics. VCP, VCR. polyester cloths and Ililsha fish.
The arrested Toyeb Ali. Sherin Ali and Ranjit Kumar Shaba were sent to police custody.
Several cases were filed with different police stations in this connection.

Minister accorded reception
Oct 9 : District unit of Bangladesh Nationalist Parly (BNP) accorded a reception lo Deputy Minister and local MP A.B.M. Zahidul Haque at the local Shilpakala Academy Friday, reports UNO.
The Minister in his address called upon the people lo extend their cooperation to the present democratic government lo implement it's uplift programmes.
He assured the local people of his full cooperation to solve their problems saying that the present Government would bring prosperity in the country through Implementing ihc 19-point programmes of laic pres-idcnl Ziaur Rahman.
Chaired by convenor of the local unit Prof 1 labibur Rahman Bhuiyan, the meeting was also addressed by Moulana Md Ataur Rahman Khan MP, Masud Helull, Mazharul Islam, Shariful Islam Sharif, Khaled Shaifullah Shohei and Asa-duzzaman Ripon.
Earlier, Haque visited Sadar, Pakundia and llossalnpur upazilas during his three-day visit and addressed separate spontaneous gathering.

One killed during crossfire with Shanti Bahini
Oct 0 : A man was shot dead at Naityupara under Matlranga upazila of the district Monday during a cross fire between law enforcing agency and tribal Insurgents, reports UNB.
Official sources said, the victim Ram Krishna Chakma (40). was killed in the corss fire which continued almost half an hour.
The shoot out ensued when the tribal insurgents opened fire on the members of law enforcing agency who were pa trolling the suva.

Diarrhoea death toll rises to 110
Oct 0 : Diarrhoea claimed four more lives and attacked several others during the last two days raising the death toll 1 10, Civil Surgeon office sources said here today, re ports UNB.
Official sources said. 15 people died in Sadar upazila, 20 in Paiashbarl. 24 In CobtndagawiJ. 20 in Sodullapur, 4 in Fulcharl. 4 in Shaghata and 23 In Sundarganj upazilas during the last five weeks.
A total of 5.748 people in seven upazilas of the district were allocked by Ihe disease during the period while about 500 affected people have so far been admitted lo Gaibandha Modern Hospital and upazila health complexes.
Ninety-five medical teams have been working in the af fueled areas lo combat the disease. the sources added.
