PABNA. Sept 8: BNP and Awami League supporters were locked in a gunbattle in the town tonight. Injuring an unspecified number of people, reports UNB.

Witnesses said activists of both the organisations used cut-rifle. pipegun and fired about SO shots as the fighting erupted at Kalachanpara. following tension over the death of two student leaders esuller.

The trouble started on September 2 with Jattyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing ruling BNP. claiming that Its activist Serajut Hossain Shaheen had been beaten to death by Chhatra League (AA) supporters On September 5. pro-Awami League Chhatra League (A-A) leader Ari fur Rahman Parag died after being beaten by rivals. BCL blamed JCD workers for the death.

A daylong hartal was observed In the town today at the call of Chhatra League protesting the killing of Parag.

Police confirmed the fighting but would not give details.

Salam condemn* killing

BNP Secretary General Barrister Abdus Salam Talukder Sunday condemned the killing of a Chhatra Dal leader by armed miscreants belonging to Mujlbbadi Chhatra League at Pabna. adds BSSz

In a statement Talukder alleged that the Jatlyatabadl Chhatra Dal leader Serajul Hossain Shahid of Pabna city was critically Injured by the armed miscreants on September 2. Later Shahid died at Pabna Hospital on the following day.

Salam Talukder conveyed his deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved family and prayed for the peace of the departed sou).

Talukder also condemned the attack and ransacking of the houses of BNP Pabna city branch General Secretary Tau-fiq Habib by the same group of miscreants
