More than 150 young scientists from 64 districts are displaying their innovations at the central competition of the 14th National Science and Technology Week, now being held at the Science Museum premises at Agargaon in the city, reports BSS.

These young competitors got first positions in both senior and junior groups at the district level competitions, held in January this year. About 35,000 budding scientists, representing different schools, colleges and science clubs.

participated in different activities of the week, including the competitions on innovations.

Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia Inaugurated the central competition at the Science Museum this morning.

Indigenous resources and waste materials were used in most of the innovative projects at the competition.

M Atiqul Alam from Setu Science Club. Rangpur manufactured low cost sand paper using the wastes of metal foundries as the basic raw materials.

He also prepared a gum by himself from fish scales. The gum is required for fixing tin-powdered foundry wastes on the paper to get the sand paper.

Kazi Mahfuzul Karim of Pabna Zila School has demon; strated a project where electrolysis of water creates water vapour which pushes water from underground reservoirs into overhead tanks. He claimed that this low cost system could push water upto 34 feet high and would be suitable for use at the upazila head-

quarters.

Eman-ul-Huq of Feni Government Pilot High School has manufactured carbon paper from the carbon rod of used dry cell batteries.

Government School Munshi-ganj has developed automatic fire extinguisher which reacts at the smoke and heat and go into action.

Atiqur Rahman and Rajiv of Bigghyan Khelaghar. Shantinagar. have innovated digital thermometre while Tanjinur Rahman of Che tana Blggyan Club. Korotia, developed a variety of rice called 'patan' suitable for cultivation in saline water.

Abdullah al Mamun of Ibne-Tahmia High School. ComiHa has innovated Bangla Telegraph system where Bangla alphabet are transmitted in telegraphic codes.
