The visiting three-member Pakistani parliamentary dele gation fed by Senator Kazi Hussain Ahmed was briefed Wednesday about post-cyclone relief and rehabilitation activities in the affected areas, report BSS

The briefing was conducted by Brigadier Safat at the Prime Minister’s Relief Activities and Monitoring Cell in Dhaka.

The Pakistani delegation was informed that the cyclone damaged 15,000 square kilometer areas of coastal belt as a result of which normal life was totally paralysed and economic infrastructure badly shaken.

The delegation was informed that Immediately after the cyclone Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia rushed to the affected areas and issued directives for prompt relief and rehabilitation measures.

Regarding the relief activities the delegation was informed that emergency foodstuff including chapati made by members of the armed forces, molasses, chlra and drinking water were initially airdropped in the affected areas. Immediately after restoring normal communication system the government further geared

up the relief activities and so far distributed Taka 14.24 crore In cash. 25.000 metric tons of rice. 8.000 metric tons of wheat. 13.000 pieces of blankets and a huge quantity of relief goods including potato, pulse, biscuits, saree. lungi. utensils and clothes.

The government had also distributed 76.444 bundle of CI sheets and 6.000 pieces of tents as house-building purpose. For treatment of sick and injured persons and prevention of epidemics a good number of medical teams were sent and medicine were distributed.

The delegation was informed that the first ph-e of relief operation had already been completed and new rehabilitation activities were going on in full swing.

Pakistan parliamentary delegation led by Senator Kazi Hussain Ahmed called on Foreign Minister ASM Mustaflzur Rahman in Dhaka Wednesday, reports BSS.

During the meeting Foreign Minister appraised them of the effects of the devastating cyclone and the relief and rehabilitation programmes taken by the government to ameliorate the sufferings of the affected people.

He said the distribution of relief material to the affected areas is still going on. In this connection Foreign Minister recalled with appreciation the help and assistance given by Pakistan for the cyclone affected people.

The leader of the Pakistan delegation said the main objective of the visit is to express solidarity with the people of Bangladesh at this hour of their need.

Senator Ahmed said the delegation will work to create public opinion at home and abroad to generate assistance for Bangladesh to overcome the disaster
