The scheduled meeting of the Government with the Opposition offered by Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was not held on Saturday.

A BNP source told The Daily Star that Opposition Awami League preferred such a meeting at the initiative of Acting President Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed to form an all-party relief committee. An Awami League source, on the other hand, said the Prime Minister's offer in fact meant asking the Opposition to work under the relief committee formed by the BNP government. This was a clear rejection of the demand for forming an all-party committee, the source said.

The Awami League source also said, the Government did not extend any formal invitation for the proposed meeting The source said they wanted io cooperate with the Government in all possible

A BNP sources, however, complained that AL was trying to earn cheap popularity out of human miseries by blaming the government.
