PABNA, Feb I : Railway service tn the Western Zone suf fcrs badly following the shortage of engines. At present only 140 railway engines are tn op-cration of which 70 have been put Into broadgauge in Pakscy Division and 70 tn metre gauge section In Lalmonlrhal Division. •

The engines put into broad gauge section maintain services far Intercity and focal trains, shunting, transhipment of goods. As many as 14 engines arc now lying in the workshop for repair

Engines allotted for metre gauge scclton arc put on carrying Intercity, local and goods trains, five for shunting, one for pilot train, one for carrying "spares to Saidpur Railway workshop, three for tranship ment, two for Railway I’rojcet Division ahd two to function as shuttle trains. Ywcntyninc engines now await repair al different workshops

The total length of railway track in the Western Zone is 14,946 kilometre. Most of the engines with 875 horse power capacity were imported in 1953. The longivity of these engines expired about 15 years ago But these arc still being used.
