MAVl.Vl BAZAR. Feb 1 : The construction work of 14 government primary school build Ings in Maulvi Bazar district lias been left incomplete since the 1983-84 financial year.

The schools were taken tip under the development scheme involving Taka 2.80 lakh each during the 1983-84 financial year but the con slruction of schools has been left incomplete although the lime limit for the completion of the work lapsed seven years ago.

According to an official source, the 'schools arc l’alhanushar, Singraiul and Usmangar government primary schools under Kamalgonj Upazila, Kashipur. Chatigon, Jawa and Bhujbal primary schools under Rajnagpr Upazila. Ilaripur. Kumarshall, Durgapur. Govindapur, Gajltcka and Shabajpur primary schools under Barlckha upazila.

In this connection, several investigations were held to in dentify the actual position of those schools

,11 reveals that only five to twelve per cent of the work lias been completed and 80 to IOO per cent of the tendered money has'been paid to the contractors without any work In some cases payment and supply of construction materi als have been made to the con tractors without any work.

When contacted the author ity concerned here confirmed that Taka 28 lakh have been taken away by the contractors without any work. In this connection three separate eases against three contractors have been pending with Anti-corruption Bureau lor the last sin years while complaints against ihe rest of the contractors hav< been pending with the higher education department authority.

It is alleged that the contractors involved tn the misappropriation of fund enlisted their names as contractors with the Facility Department with take address. As a ■•■suit the authority concerned could not trace out them.

River silted up

The Gopla- rivet ‘under Maulvi Bazar district originating from Ifaflhaor has beep sited up and gradually losing Its hydraulic capacity.

During the monsoon rain and flood waters remain stagnant damaging crops in Mir-japur. Kagabola, Nazirabad. Amtail, Kamalpur Gyashnagar and a part of Kanakpur union of the district.

The river discharges water from llailhaor which is connected with over 352 canals originated from different hills and bccls of the district and water of the low-lying areas of Maulvi Bazar and Srccmangal upazilas also falls in to the llailhaor through the canals.Beggars are creating much Inconveniences to the dwellers of Maulvi Bazar town.

According to a report, the beggars, mostly floating people affected by the natural calamities arc pouring into the town in longer number from rural areas with the hope of better earnings al Maulvi Bazar which is known as "Bangladesher London.’ But dwellers com-

plained that many beggars respond to nature's call in open fields and on walkways polluting the environment. It is also alleged that many of the women beggars have resorted to prostitution for bare sustenance giving rise to the antisocial activities in the town.
